Raney Nickel, a commercially available powdered nickel-aluminum catalyst, has been flame-sprayed onto various stainless steel shapes used in methanation reactors for the purpose of developing a process to make synthetic natural gas (methane, CH sub 4 ) from 3:1 synthesis gas (3H sub 2 + 1CO) produced in a coal gasifier. The flame spray equipment used is commercially available and the spray parameters selected are essentially conventional, but some equipment modifications and variations in spray techniques have been made to produce acceptable coated reactor surfaces. Examination of the coatings shows that a multi-phase structure of Ni sub 2 Al sub 3 , NiAl sub 3 and a eutectic of Ni sub 2 Al sub 3 and alpha -aluminum is deposited. (ERA citation 08:021069)
