This inconsistency of position in the Schedules will, no doubt, be rectified in future editions. Further, it is not indicated whether the loss of section is to be regarded as occurring by normal wear of the table of rails laid on straight alignments, or by wear of the table and side of the heads of rails laid in curved track, or by general corrosion from any cause at any part of the cross section of the rail. It is thought that vertical wear of the table of the rail was meant to be the principal factor in the consideration of the effect of the percentage loss on the strength of the rail section, though in the Schedules of Dimensions, at the moment, the permissible axle load is related to the weight of the rail.
