摘要

The consultants, engaged by the U.S. Trade and Development Program (TDP), were charged with the task of assessing developments of privatization of Malaysian owned operations and determining the sales prospects for U.S. businesses. The privatization program is an ambitious effort, calling for the transformation of approximately 260 enterprises valued at roughly $6.0 billion over a multiyear period. There is limited justification to having U.S. businesses gear their marketing efforts in Malaysia to the pace and scope of privatization efforts. The reputation in Malaysia of U.S. products and service is fair and slowly improving. Exports from U.S. to Malaysia in 1990 totaled about $3.8 billion. Principal products were electronic components, plus machinery, transport equipment, chemicals, food stuffs, consumer goods and manufactured products. Sales of U.S. goods have risen approximately 10-15 percent annually for the past few years. By comparison, U.S. imports are estimated at $5.3 million in 1990, principally electronic goods, petroleum, apparel, rubber and palm oil. In short, the business outlook for U.S. firms doing business in the country is moderately encouraging. S
