摘要

Normal growth consists of an intricate series of changes manifested in four major growth periods - prenatal, infancy, childhood, and adolescence. One of the most reliable indices of growth or lack of growth in children is height. Based on common pediatric criteria, five percent of all children would naturally fall below the fifth percentile and would thus be considered short. Children with short stature may also be defined as those falling below the third percentile of the standard growth chart. The psychosocial as well as very real physical limitations of short stature have led to considerable interest in its etiology, proper diagnosis, and effective treatment. Growth hormones have been extensively studied in this regard, and advances in recombinant DNA technology have resulted in an increasingly available supply of human growth hormone for study and treatment. There exists considerable controversy, however, about the utilization of growth hormones for the treatment of short stature. The bibliography contains citations to fournal articles and monographs on the relationship of growth hormones and short stature from a variety of online files from January 1983 through September 1989. Journal articles have been categorized into seven subject areas; a citation appears under only one category.
