The study was designed to determine the effect of adenoidectomy on eustachian tube function and on the morbidity of otitis media. The study was a prospective, randomized, controlled clinical trial of children who previously had tympanostomy tubes inserted due to chronic otitis media with effusion and/or frequently recurrent acute otitis media. Children were randomly assigned to have either adenoidectomy or no surgery. Outcome measures included eustachian tube function tests, the number of episodes of ear disease, the duration of ear disease, the incidence of complications and hearing tests.
