Under the auspices of the National Science Foundation a workshop on Research Needs in the Pulp and Paper and Related Industries was held at the University of Maine on July 12 and 13, 1988. Recognized experts in the U.S. pulp and paper industry gathered to discuss the threats to industry competitiveness and to develop a statement of the research needs of the U.S. pulp and paper industry and affiliates. In particular, research needs were identified on which industry, government and academia could work cooperatively. The workshop was organized around seven topics, each of which was addressed by a group of industry and university experts. These topics were: pulp manufacturing processes; paper manufacturing processes; properties of process streams; sensors, simulation and process control; extending properties of traditional materials; environmental concerns; quality and operations optimization.
