摘要

The report addressed key issues such as the need for preclinical testing, what constitutes adequate metabolic and growth testing, and what are adequate control diets. It concluded that knowledge of animal physiology was inadequate for evaluation of whole formulas. Formula components should be tested in animals prior to clinical trials of formulas, however. The protocol for clinical metabolism and growth studies would depend upon the nature of the infant formula. As with term infants, new preterm infant formulas or formulas by new manufacturers would require a battery of tests during the study. Modified formulas would only require tests that measured the impact of the altered component. A report on formulas for term infants is also available.
