To build and maintain pipeline systems that continue to meet today's standard and future needs, the Gas Research Institute (GRI) is funding a research and development program at NCF Industries, Inc. to develop a family of new pipeline products. The brochure summarizes the research effort, research results, and future plans. An advanced pipeline material using a glass fiber composite is being developed to improve the resistance of steel to crack propagation, corrosion, or mechanical damage. Field experiments show the composite's ability to stop fracture propagation on full size line pipes at operating pressure. A low-cost, glass-fiber/resin composite is also being developed for a variety of applications in pipeline construction and maintenance. Significant cost savings are anticipated with both products and field tests are planned to evaluate them under actual operating conditions.
