The study addresses the factors controlling dormancy and germination in Scrippsiella trochoidea cysts, and the physiological characteristics underlying these processes. Cysts experienced a period of dormancy lasting approximately 25 days, during which germination did not occur. Germination rate was optimal above 14 degs C, and decreased markedly as temperatures decreased below this level. Nutrient depletion retarded, but did not prevent germination.
