The dissertation research attempts to develop a general conceptual framework to assess the impact of interorganizational strategies, such as contract management, on organizational performance. The researcher hypothesizes that the hospital's pre-contract orientation will effect performance under contract management. A survey questionnaire was mailed to approximately 1200 trustee members of hospital management asking why hospitals chose contract management. American Hospital Association data were used to measure financial performance for the time period 1974 through 1983. The researchers concluded that hospitals which viewed contract management differently were likely to exhibit different performance after contract management.
