摘要

The aims of the research were to develop an extensive database of patients who fall during hospitalization; and develop a predictive model of patients at risk to fall in hospitals. A fall was any witnessed or unwitnessed occurrence in which a patient came to rest on the floor. Fallers and non-faller controls were studied through direct patient examination, chart review, staff interview and environmental assessment. Three classes for time relative to fall/contact were used: Group I = Pre-admit; Group II = Admission to 24 hours before fall/contact; and Group III = Within 24 hours of fall/contact. The values for all of the significant variables in each of these time periods are relative risks. For example, when patients were judged by their nurse to act independently, their risk of falling was 41% higher than the control group. The authors say that there are a number of risk factors in their model which are amendable to identification in patients prior to a first fall in the hospital; and amendable to alteration or influence so as to potentially assist in averting falls.
