摘要

Increasing population pressure has forced many farmers in the West African semiarid tropics to decrease, if not eliminate, fallow periods and rely on chemical fertilizer in order to maintain soil fertility. Under intensive and continuous cropping, nutrient imbalances, especially those of sulphur and the micronutrients, may arise and increase in frequency and severity with increases in production intensity. Relevant information on these imbalances is consolidated in the literature review. Specific items covered include fertilizer elements (phosphorus, nitrogen, potassium); macroelements (calcium and magnesium, sulphur); and micronutrients (boron, molybdenum, zinc, manganese, copper, and iron).
