The purpose of these studies was to provide a historical framework for the interpretation and evaluation of the historic resources in the project area. From archival sources a total of 95 historic sites were identified. This included 13 ranches occupied at the time the Army acquired the maneuver area in 1983, 20 early homesteads dated between 1867 and 1980, 42 later homesteads and ranches established between 1891 and 1940, three early stage coach stations, nine roads, three towns, two cemetaries, and three school houses. In addition, 198 archaeological sites were interpreted, and these were classified by descriptive types.
