摘要

The testimony concerned the information systems used by NIOSH to assess and report the extent of occupational illnesses and injuries in the United States. NIOSH relies on six data collection systems to assess the extent and monitor the trends in occupational disease, injuries, disabilities, and deaths. In addition NIOSH also uses a system to collect data on potential occupational exposures. Two of these systems are operated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the Department of Labor. One is the BLS Annual Survey of Occupational Injuries and Illnesses. The second is the BLS Supplementary Data System which contains detailed first reports of injuries and illnesses covered by the worker's compensation programs. The third source of information is the Social Security Administration Disability Award File. The fourth is the National Vital Statistics Program, maintained by the nation's State health departments. The fifth is the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System, a data base maintained by NIOSH in conjunction with the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The sixth is the National Health Interview Survey, an annual survey of 40,000 households, conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics. The major system used by NIOSH to monitor potential exposures to occupational hazards in the United States in the National Occupational Hazards/Exposure Survey.
