This is a summary of the evaluation of a series of workshops on nutrition counseling offered by the University of Iowa and the University of Pittsburgh during the years of 1981 through 1983, sponsored by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The workshops were based on a model workshop created and field-tested by the University of Iowa in 1978. Each workshop consisted of four phases. Phase I prepared the participants for the first session, Phase II consisted of a four- or five-day skills-building experience, Phase III was a four- to six-month period for practice with some assistance via telephone, and Phase IV consisted of a two-day followup session designed to address problems encountered during Phase III.
