The purpose of the contract is to develop practical, accurate, safe, and inexpensive techniques for the rapid diagnosis of viral infections, primarily by the detection of virion components in clinical specimens. The ultimate goal of the contract is to develop tests that can be performed by small laboratories which will allow the physician to make an accurate diagnosis of specific viral infection early in the course of the disease. Work during this year has been directed at increasing the practicality of enzyme immunoassay techniques, expanding the scope of the techniques by developing assays for additional agents, and using the techniques to study the epidemiology of gastrointestinal and respiratory disease in a population in Baltimore, MD. The report describes enzyme immunoassays using beta-lactamase which result in improved visual reading of the reaction. Studies with antibodies from eggs from immunized chickens are described and proposed as a possible alternative to the use of monoclonal antibodies as reagents in EIAs.
