摘要

The report is a synthesis of findings and conclusions drawn from the Third Wave information provided by a community cohort of elders over 70 years of age. The findings and conclusions deal with the critical issues of gerontological theory and program policy for the elderly: the extent of elderly dependency and need for assistance in physical function and social function; priorities among unmet needs; mental health status; reported health status and utilization of health services including physicians, dentists, hospitals, and nursing homes; knowledge and use of social services; the breadth of the informal support network available to elders; the elders' own judgment of the informal system they would choose; and a series of other potential risk factors which influence significant end-points, including tobacco use, sleep patterns, food consumption, housing issues, fear of crime, occurrence of significant life events, and economic circumstances. While there are inherent risks in making generalizations about elders based on even the most carefully conceived and executed survey, the findings and conclusions are designed to facilitate the development of hypotheses for the advancement of theory and practice, not to encourage the perpetuation of sterotyped perceptions about elders as a group, sterotypes which only confuse and mask the wealth of heterogeneity among community elders.
