The central objective behind India's space program is to put to work space science and technology in aid of the country's developmental efforts. The areas chosen for application are those where satellite - based systems have an inherent edge over conventional, earth-bound systems. India's philosophy has been to learn to do things on her own; to try and develop what cannot be obtained and make use of what is available in terms of knowledge, experience, technology after modifying, bending and adapting it to suit her particular, sometimes peculiar, needs. Self-reliance is an important element in this effort. The topics covered in this paper are: State of Space Science and Technology; Applications of Space Science and Technology; An Appraisal of the Program; Looking ahead; International Issues, and International Cooperation and the Role of the United Nations. A glossary is also given.
