The research will employ the economic theory of principal agent relations to formulate a model of the refiner's decision to operate service stations through an independent operator or on a company-owned basis. This model will allow for an assessment of the likely impact of legislatively imposed franchise restrictions on the growth rate of company ownership and indirectly on that of the unbranded segment of the marketplace.
