摘要

This project researched the questions as to what types of watchstanding tasks can be trained on a simulator that might qualify for equivalency to real world experience, and how many hours of simulator training are necessary to promote the acquisition of skills such that a simulator-trained subject's performance would equal that acquired by a typical merchant marine cadet at sea. Fourth class cadets at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, New York, who had no real at-sea experience were given a combination of classroom and simulator training aimed at teaching watchstanding and shiphandling skills equal to the level supposedly reached by a cadet during the sea duty required by the Academy. All research and training was performed at the Computer Aided Operations Research Facility (CAORF). Performance before and after the simulator training was measured by expert masters who viewed video tape recordings of cadet performance in a simulated watchstanding exercise. Performance was also checked by mariner and psychologist staff observers using an evaluation form consisting of behavior checklist ratings.
