The diffraction of a pulsed electromagnetic wave by a semi-infinite screen located in the interface of two different media is investigated theoretically. The incident electromagnetic field, generated by a line source, is decomposed into its plane-wave constituents, after which the diffraction problem is solved for each plane-wave constituent separately. The Wiener-Hopf technique is used to solve a pair of dual integral equations. Special attention is given to the numerical evaluation of the factorization problem; also an approximate factorization method is discussed. The modified Cagniard technique is used to derive closed-form expressions for the field components anywhere in the configuration. Numerical results, for points of observation near the edge of the screen, are presented in a number of illustrative cases for different positions of the source and different contrasts of the two media.
