摘要

The study explores the effects of environmental lead (i.e., lead in water and gasoline, airborne pollutants, etc.) and lead in paint on blood lead levels in children, based on records compiled by the Detroit Lead Poisoning Control Program (Michigan) between 1972 to 1978. Blood lead levels of black children decreased slightly in the period studied. Blood lead levels varied by age, and seasonal variations of levels were similar for both races, peaking in summer. Air and gasoline lead levels increased after 1975, although the total lead in gasoline had declined earlier. Lead - based paint was a significant factor in causing elevated blood levels in children, and abatement or elimination of this hazard resulted in a reduced blood lead content. Recommendations, 12 references, a map, and data tables and graphs are included. A discussion on the relationship between blood lead and erythrocyte protophorphyrin and sociodemographic indicators is appended.
