摘要

Biofouling of cellulose diacetate reverse osmosis (RO) membranes used for demineralization of municipal wastewater was investigated at Water Factory 21, a 0.66 cu m/sec (15mgd) advanced wastewater reclamation facility located in Fountain Valley, California. The fouling material was primarily organic in composition (about 90% dry wt) and contained 13% to 18% carbohydrate and 15% to 30% protein. The principal inorganic elements detected were chlorine, calcium, phosphorus and sulfur. Electron microscopy revealed that the fouling bacteria were attached within the biofilm via a network of extracellular polymeric fibrils. Although there was some correlation between the physico-chemical and microbiological properties of the RO feedwater and the membrane fouling layer, the dynamics of this interaction were not investigated.
