摘要

The rise in importance of science and technology as components of many national policy issues has led to growing belief that the quality of government decision-making would be improved if the general public knew more about the principles and methods of science and technology and about the limitations on scientific method and knowledge. In support of this proposition, the Government has opened new opportunities for citizens groups and individuals to gain access to the decision-making machinery and to try to influence policy decisions. Some efforts have also been made to increase the public understanding of science. An effective program will require a long-term commitment to the improvement of science education in the schools and the improvement of science literacy in the general public. All news media can be used for this purpose. However, no medium or approach reaches all of the public equally well. Because they enjoy higher public confidence than does the government itself, scientific associations, schools, and other nonprofit organizations associated with medicine, science, and education are the institutions that are most likely to be effective in planning and conducting programs intended to improve science literacy.
