摘要

Although current projections indicate that the United States will not face a nutrient shortage even in times of crop failures,present diets,particularly high protein foods,will become increasingly costly in relation to income. The time has past that this country can expect the food producers to increase production to the extent it will compensate for waste and feed a growing population. In fact,the costs of preventing waste are often much less in dollars and energy than the cost of increasing primary production. Never in history has it been more urgent to fund and implement Food Science research. Leaks in the pipeline between producer and consumer are reducing amounts of available food and are wasting energy. They need immediate attention. The pipeline itself needs the benefit of new technology and short and long-term research to perform efficiently. The following recommendations were submitted to reflect needs to increase the available food supply while maintaining efficiency.
