The effect of noise levels of 90 decibels or higher on hearing loss was investigated in 188 employees of a canning facility. Workers exposed for 1, 5, 10, or 15 years were given audiometry tests for temporary threshold shift (TTS) and permanent threshold shift (PTS) 2 or 30 minutes after noise exposure. The TTS decreased in magnitude with increasing exposure to noise levels. In the first year of exposure to noise an average PTS of 15 decibels was experienced by workers tested at information frequencies of 3000, 4000, or 6000 Hertz and about 5 decibels in the speech frequencies of 500, 1000, and 2000 Hertz. The authors suggest that new employees be given hearing tests and that a hearing conservation program be implemented.
