Sources of uncertainty are studied. A major factor is the significant scatter of the observed data about the proposed attenuation laws. Thus, the actual peak acceleration may be substantially different from the predicted value. The uncertainty is related to systematic differences at the sites where the motions were observed, such as local soil conditions which were not accounted for in the law. Other influences upon the dispersion in the data about the attenuation law are considered from earthquake to earthquake, noting variations in the mechanism generating the earthquake and variations in the propagation paths of the waves. Seismic risk analysis has been extended to account for peak structural response. (Author)
