Procedures and details are described for a simple and inexpensive fracture test developed for making fracture-transition studies and weldment-performance evaluations of high-strength sheet materials. The test is based on the use of rubber as a noncompressible fluid medium for transmitting the force of an impact blow to 6-in.-square specimens. The test is conducted in uniquely designed equipment void of complicated fixtures or gripping devices. Thus, after only brief instructions, skilled or semi-skilled technicians can evaluate rapidly numerous samples over a wide range of testing tem¬peratures.
