An analysis is presented for the positions of particles at various time intervals in a three-dimensional incompressible laminar boundary layer on a flat surface for main flows consisting of streamline translates having constant axial velocity. Boundary-layer particles initially ar¬rayed on a line normal to the surface trace out twisted surfaces as they progress downstream. Tables are presented for computing the curves formed by the instantaneous positions of the particles at various time intervals for main-flow streamlines that can be approximated by third-order polynomials.nFor viscous-flow problems where it is important to know the length of time a particle remains near a bounding surface, the tables facilitate rapid computation of the residence times of boundary-layer particles for a given flow configuration.
