The fast development of technology during past decades has enabled to think product development and productization in a new way in which the product process covers the whole product life-cycle from marketing research to recycling. The aim of the MoniDigi-project was to develop a modern virtual design environment for multitechnological products and a concept for digital product process (DPP) which can be utilized widely in small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The interview study about the present state of SMEs revealed that modern design softwares are used commonly and digital product data is exploited in manufacturing partially. However, the product data management and product lifecycle management (PLM) systems are used very little and e-mail is the most common way to transfer data which sets challenge for version management and data security. According to the surveys the SMEs are interested in DPP but they do not have sufficiently information and they cannot invest on required investigations. In the developed DPP concept the product life-cycle was divided in four main phases: product development, manufacturing, after-sales and dismantling. The concept is based on a data network connecting companies and a PLM system which is used to manage product development processes, product data and subcontracting. The product development process was verified with real product cases which were developed using virtual design tools. The commissioning of virtual design and product data management systems may delimit implementation of the DPP concept in SMEs.
