The evolution of the activities of the Unit of Natural Substances of the Italian National Institute of Health tells the history of the steps in the study of plant constituents and analytical tools allowed by advancements in phytochemistry. The Unit adapted itself to changes, according to the developing of new products in the market, like nutraceutics and botanicals, that are the modern forms of natural product utilization.
