摘要

The Wisconsin Department of Transportations (WisDOT's) use of high-performance concrete in bridge decks to extend service life has not averted shrinkage or autogenous cracking of concrete. Attempts to control shrinkage cracking through high-range water-reducing admixtures and steel fibers have also met with limited success. Alternative admixtures, such as coal fly ash or conventional coal combustion products, may offer solutions to cracking problems. The objective of this project is to evaluate five or more admixtures, including CCPs, for suitability and effectiveness in reducing concrete cracking on bridge decks. Tasks entail research and identification of potential admixtures, performance evaluation, evaluation of admixture impact on air entrainment and admixture interaction with aggregate types, and development of specifications for each admixture. Expected benefits of this research are improved concrete bridge deck designs that will increase durability, reduce cracking and ultimately reduce life-cycle costs and public inconvenience.
