摘要

Federal and state officials and the public have expressed great interest in the environmental impact of the Massachusetts Bay Outfall that began discharging an average of 380 million gallons per day of treated sewage effluent on September 6, 2000. Baseline monitoring of bottom and suspended sediments near this outfall has been carried out by the USGS (United States Geological Survey) since 1989 in order to determine the cause, magnitude, and possible consequences of chemical changes prior to and after the outfall startup. These studies of sediment chemistry are one aspect of a multi-disciplinary USGS program in the Massachusetts Bay.
