The sport fishery for muskellunge Esox masquinongy relies on annual artificial propagation and stocking of fingerlings because of failure of natural reproduction in reservoirs. Muskellunge exhibits dimorphic growth, such that females grow much faster than males. Propagation and stocking of all-female muskellunge would improve stocking efficiency, thereby benefiting the sport fishing industry. The success of producing all-female muskellunge depends on the availability of baseline information on reproductive biology and genetics of this species. The general goal of our studies was to enrich baseline data dealing with various aspects of muskellunge reproduction, as well as to develop techniques of sex manipulation for improvement of growth in muskellunge.
