摘要

The primary purpose of this descriptive correlational study was to investigatethe relationships between nurses' job satisfaction, patient satisfaction, and patient adherence to care provider recommendations after hospitalization within a Veterans Administration (VA) Hospital. A secondary purpose of this research was to develop a model to predict nurse and patient outcomes. Systems Theory provided the theoretical framework for this research. Both nurses and patients completed standardized questionnaires. The findings indicate that nurses were only low to moderately satisfied with their jobs, least satisfied with organizational policies and task requirements, and most satisfied with professional status. Overall, patients were very satisfied with their care at the VA and most satisfied with their nursing care. Patients were also moderately adherent to both general and specific care provider recommendations. There was insufficient power to test the patient-level model, and conclusions regarding the relationships between nurses' job satisfaction, patient satisfaction, and patient adherence could not be made. The methodological challenges of conducting a patient level analysis within the hospital setting (e.g., matching nurses and patients, accounting for 'exposure' to nursing care or 'critical moments', etc.) is discussed. Further research is necessary to explicate these relationships.
