Vertical and horizontal restructuring in the defense industry is creating a new reality for involved organizations and countries. In this context Swedish defense industry companies are forced to change accordingly, identifying new strategies and roles. These strategies will influence the supply chain, creating new supply chain management strategies and relations with the sub-tier structures. In a national Swedish defense perspective there is concern that knowledge and competencies related to government-prioritized strategic competencies will be influenced. By studying three supply chains in the Swedish defense industry, this report identifies important driving-forces, threats and possibilities. Finally, realities and challenges in the Swedish defense industry are summarized. (1) The end-user domination is strong and is shaping the behaviour in the whole supply chain; (2) Dual-use is becoming a necessity for actors in the defense industry to be cost-effective; (3) Systems that are produced in the defense industry have to handle different technology clock speed; (4) The outsourcing trend among primes can lead to outsourcing of vital competence areas such as software R&D and systems integration; (4) Finally, there is no panacea solution for choice of strategy for the supply chain.
