Estimates of the number of children who suffer abuse range from 1 to 2.5 million211u001eeach year. More than 1,100 children are know to die at the hands of caregivers 211u001eeach year, and recent data suggest that actual rates of fatal abuse for children 211u001eunder age 4 may be double the rate suggested by vital statistics data. Known risk 211u001efactors for abuse include being of low socioeconomic status, having a preschool-211u001eage child, using physical discipline, experiencing high levels of anger, holding 211u001eunrealistic expectations for the child, and failing to enjoy a positive 211u001erelationship with the child. Thousands of programs and millions of dollars have 211u001ebeen allocated to treat child abuse, yet there has been very little empirical 211u001eevaluation of such interventions. Most experts agree that prevention is likely to 211u001eprove much more effective than intervention, yet even fewer prevention programs 211u001ehave data to support their effects.
