摘要

Funded by the 1987 Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act, the211u001eStrategic Highway Research Program (SHRP), was a five year, $150 million research 211u001eprogram to improve the performance of the nation's roads by addressing four key 211u001eareas: concrete and structures; highway safety and maintenance; asphalt; and long-211u001eterm pavement performance. Nearly one-third of the $150 million was allocated for 211u001ethe study of asphalt, specifically to develop performance based specifications 211u001ethat would relate material properties of the binder and the mix to field 211u001eperformance. Superpave encompasses the products of the SHRP asphalt research. The 211u001eSuperpave (Superior PERforming Asphalt PAVEments) system was developed to give 211u001ehighway engineers and contractors the tools they need to design asphalt pavements 211u001ethat will perform better under extremes in temperature and traffic loads. The 211u001eSuperpave system consists of three interrelated elements: an asphalt binder 211u001especification; a mix design and analysis system; and performance tests and 211u001eprediction models. This report is a compilation and synthesis of Washington DOT's 211u001eexperience with selected components and concepts of the SHRP/Superpave technology 211u001eto include the following: performance graded (PG) binder usage; binder 211u001especification validation; gyratory compaction matrix; volumetric mix design; and 211u001ethe Superpave Shear Test (SST).
