The National Advanced Manufacturing Testbed (NAMT) is a distributed testbed211u001eenabling collaborative research between scientists and engineers at the National 211u001eInstitute of Standards and Technology (NIST), remote industry locations, and 211u001egovernment and university laboratories. Since 1996 the NAMT has been the primary 211u001eplatform for enabling the operation of the Information-Based Manufacturing 211u001eProgram of the NIST Manufacturing Engineering Laboratory (MEL). The NAMT supports 211u001ethe information technology (IT) needs of a collection of advanced research and 211u001edevelopment (R&D) projets focusing on technology, measurement, and standards 211u001eissues that are important to the industrial sectors served by NIST. Projects 211u001esupported by the NAMT serve industries that are customers of the NIST MEL and the 211u001eother NIST Measurements and Standards Laboratories, as well as the NIST 211u001eManufacturing Extension Partnership (www.mep.nist.gov) and Advanced Technology 211u001eProgram (www.atp.nist.gov). The purpose of this report is to document the 211u001etechnological characteristics and functionality of the physical testbed 211u001ecomponents of the NAMT. The report documents the NAMT design rationale, including 211u001ereasons why certain technologies and systems were selected to be part of the NAMT 211u001eversus others.
