Cataract extraction is the most commonly performed Medicare surgical procedure.211u001eApproximately 1.5 million extractions are performed on beneficiaries annually. 211u001ePrevious studies found that extensive variation exists in pre-, intra, and post-211u001eoperative aspects of cataract management. A recent national cataract management 211u001eguideline questioned the clinical usefulness of several preoperative diagnostic 211u001etests and the appropriateness of YAG laser capsulotomy rates. This study examined 211u001ethree provider factors (ophthalmologist supply, cataract surgery volume, and type 211u001eof facility) and their association with the use of six pre-operative diagnostic 211u001etests and YAG laser capsulotomy. This study was a cross-sectional analysis of 211u001ecataract patients drawn from 1991-1992 Medicare claims data. Area population and 211u001ephysician data also were incorporated. A model was developed in order to estimate 211u001ethe odds of undergoing each of seven ophthalmic services.
