As increasing populations in the tropics are forced to expand agriculture ontoacid soils, governments and development organizations will have to devise and encourage low-input technologies for sustainable productivity under difficult, acid soil conditions. Many nitrogen fixing tree (NFT) species are tolerant of acid soils, and planting them in agroforestry systems is one low-input technology that helps overcome limitations to plant growth caused by lack of nitrogen, a key nutrient that is the most widely limiting factor affecting plant growth.
