Appointment-keeping after hospitalization is a poorly understood link betweeninpatient and outpatient care. We investigated how health care system and patient characteristics influence this aspect of compliance with medical treatment. All 372 consecutive eligible patients admitted to Medicine wards were interviewed on hospitalization and after the date of their first appointment following discharge. The hospital's electronic databases were searched and charts were reviewed. Data included sociodemographics, diagnosis, comorbidity, medications, health care access and use, previous compliance behavior, and recommended followup appointments. Self-perceived health status was assessed on admission and on followup. Followup contact rate was 80%.
