摘要

The investigators tested the hypothesis that persons with acute respiratory211u001eresponsiveness to ozone are at high risk of chronic lung injury from repeated 211u001eexposure to oxidant air pollution. Nonsmoking, chronically oxidant-exposed adult 211u001eresidents (n=64) underwent lung function measurements during 1986-87 (time 3) a 211u001efollow up of larger scale field studies in 1977-78 (time 1) and 1982-83 (time 2). 211u001eThese 164 subjects showed a large decrease in forced expired volume in one second 211u001e(FEV1) between time 1 and time 2. They did not show continued decline in lung 211u001efunction between time 2 and time 3. Forty-five members of the time 3 group were 211u001estudied in the laboratory in 1989 (time 4) and showed statistically significant 211u001ebut mild acute reductions in FEV1 and forced vital capacity (FVC) during 2-hour 211u001econtrolled chamber exposures to 0.4 ppm ozone. Lung function responses to acute 211u001eozone exposures at time 4 correlated poorly with longer-term FEV1 or FVC changes 211u001eas measured over the previous time intervals (times 1-3). These results don't 211u001esupport the hypothesis that acute lung function responses to ozone exposure can 211u001epredict chronic effects in adult nonsmokers residing in oxidant-polluted 211u001ecommunities, or that such people experience unusually rapid long-term lung 211u001efunction decline.
