摘要

The goals of the report are to provide data on the professional activities of 1979-89 graduates of preventive medicine residency (PMR) programs administered by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and to provide information to improve the training of physicians in preparation for careers in public health. The project involved surveying 797 graduates of 43 PMR programs as well as 132 physicians who graduated from CDC's Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) but did not subsequently enter the CDC PMR program. Findings include that (1) PMR graduates have a strong record of leadership in public health, including the creation or management of health programs; (2) most CDC PMR and EIS graduates are involved in research, while graduates of public health school PMRs and medical school PMRs often provide patient care; (3) respondents believe PMRs provide good training in epidemiology and infectious disease, but many indicate the need for improved training in health services administration; and (4) the HRSA VII PMR training grants have substantially increased the number of physicians trained in preventive medicine. Recommendations include (1) disseminating widely the accomplishments of PMR graduates; (2) increasing funding for the HRSA PMR training grant program, ideally up to authorized funding levels; and (3) emphasizing the benefits and advantages of board certification in preventive medicine.
