The paper describes the integration of methods from artificial intelligence inthe synthesis of microarchitectures for processor control paths. For control path and finite state machine synthesis many algorithms are known. Unfortunately all these algorithms perform an optimization or decompositon of a specific microarchitecture. A general synthesis method however requires exploration of the design space for optimal microarchitectures. Because existing algorithms are all bound to specific microarchitectures, their actions are local from a design space point of view. Therefore it is very difficult to merge these algorithms to one global synthesis algorithm. However, with the introduction of a design-state abstraction for a microarchitecture, the synthesis problem can be formulated as a search problem in a design-state space. In this space, existing synthesis algorithms act as design-actions and perform local design-state transitions. Artificial intelligence provides the global synthesis process with tools for state space search and action planning. These obtain the shortest path of design-actions to a user defined target design-state. For this design-state space search the A* algorithm is implemented. The prototype system implements only a limited number of design-actions, but demonstrates the power and large flexibility of this approach.
