摘要

The United States and Japan are bound together in a relationship vital to bothnations, and to the world. But goodwill between the two nations is eroding, sparked by disputes over a stubborn trade imbalance. Recrimination threatens to emphasize negatives here and in Japan. At risk is the capacity for cooperation between the two democracies--the key to stability and prosperity in the Pacific. At risk, too, is the ability to meet the worldwide challenges of the next century. The Commission on U.S.-Japan Relations for the Twenty First Century is a privately-funded, non-partisan group of citizens in the private sector who have served in or as advisors to government. They have drawn together out of strong concern for the future of these relations. The Commission's objective is to encourage Americans to think long-term; to think of Japan as a competitor and also an ally.
