Optimize the Supply Air Temperature Reset Schedule for a Single-Duct VAV System

The supply air temperature for a single-ductvariable air volume (VAV) system is usually set as aconstant. To minimize the simultaneous cooling andheating, this supply temperature is often reset basedon either return air temperature or outside airtemperature. However, resetting the supply airtemperature not only impacts the cooling and heatingenergy consumption, but also the fan powerconsumption. If reset improperly, it may causeindoor air humidity problems or result in a fan powerconsumption penalty. This paper investigates themajor factors that impact the optimal supply airtemperature reset schedule which minimizes theoverall heating energy, cooling energy and fan powerconsumption. Simulation results are compared forsystems with different interior area ratios, loadconditions, minimum supply airflow rates, andthermal to electrical energy price ratios.
