In our era, where crime rates are rising, the use of narcotics -especially among young people- is expanding, phenomena which have acquired dangerous proportions, we, the staff of the Academic Libraries, have the duty to stand up against this trend for decadence and the absence of a vision in order to keep our young people in the Libraries.By listening to their views and proposals concerning functional issues of the Library, through everyday practice and direct contact with them, we have to reconsider tactics that are outdated and to upgrade the quality, of our services, thus creating relations of cooperation into a pleasant and friendly environment, where both users and staff could contribute to a common effort, aiming towards the improvement of the educational and, in general, the cultural work of an Academic Institution.The exploitation of modern technological achievements, such as the use of the Internet, e-mail etc., the renewal and enrichment of the collections with books covering a larger area of interest, the renovated and modernized storage and study facilities, as well as the various cultural activities like exhibitions and book presentations appealing to the general public of Thrace, will undoubtedly contribute to the cultural life in the area. The Library of the Democritus University of Thrace has dared to make an opening to the local society by undertaking similar efforts during which a wide participation and interest of the public was recorded.
