This study examined the relative importanceof price and animal performance factorson cattle finishing profitability. Using datafrom a single feedlot, sale prices, feederprices, and corn prices explained 90 to 95% ofthe variation in steer profits. About 50% ofthe variability was explained by fed cattleprices alone. Because sale, feeder, and cornprices have a large impact on profits per head,cattle feeders should attempt to manage therisks associated with these three factors.
