From a sedimentological and palaeogeographical pointudof view, in the eastern margin of the Iberian platform system, MiddleudJurassic deposits are represented by a thick pile of carbonates with minorudmarls interbedded. Different facies, within the Tortosa, Aragoneseudand Castilian platforms, pertain to two categories: internal platformudand external platform facies. A system of extensional faults was theudmajor factor determining the differentiation of several shallow, carbonate,udepicontinental platforms. The so-called Iberian Basin was audshallow intracratonic platform system, in which a relatively deep extensionaludbasin (the Catalan Basin) started to be differentiated duringudthe late Bajocian. In the eastern part of this faulted platform system,udthe occurrence of a listric fault, dipping towards the east, conditionedudthe development of a late Bajocian differentiated subsident area namedudthe Tortosa Platform.udFrom a palaeobiogeographical point of view, the ammonite fossiludassemblages of the Iberian platforms are composed of Sub-Mediterraneanudtaxa. At the eastern margin of the Iberian platform system,udthe appearance and distribution of shells of ammonoids were taphonomicallyudand ecologically controlled by regional changes of relativeudsea level. A Sub-Mediterranean zonation can be recognized, althoughudmost of the ammonites shells correspond to adult individuals arrivedudby necroplanktic drift from more open-marine or oceanic areas. Theudfollowing criteria are relevant in recognizing the maximum deepeningudepisodes in the Iberian platform system: colonization (including ontogenicuddevelopment) of open-marine taxa, immigration of oceanic taxaudand development of endemic species. In terms of Sequence Stratigraphy,udthe development of expanded, external platform sections in the TortosaudPlatform during the Garantiana Biochron (late Bajocian) is noteworthy.udDuring this episode, the Iberian platform system reached theudmaximum bathymetric values and acted as a biogeographical dispersaludarea for some taxonomic groups of ammonoids between the WesternudTethys and the Proto-Atlantic.
